How to clean pearls and care for your jewellery

Knowing how to clean pearls is the first step to preserving their natural lustre

Pearls are one of the most elegant materials in jewellery. Our pieces use pearls of the very highest quality, which
stand out for their resilience and beauty, but whose characteristic nacre / pearl coating needs particular care. And because they are combined
with rhodium-plated sterling silver or 18k gold plating, it is important to understand how to care for each material so that your pieces keep their lustre
intact from the very first day.

Care by material:
rhodium-plated silver and gold plating

Many pieces with pearls also include metals such as rhodium-plated sterling silver or 18k gold plating. Each material has its own maintenance needs, and knowing them will help you extend the life of your pieces.

Rhodium-plated sterling silver has a layer of rhodium that makes it more resistant to tarnishing and scratching than conventional silver. That is why cleaning rhodium-plated silver jewellery is easier than it seems: a soft microfibre cloth is enough to remove fingerprints and dust. If you need a deeper clean, use lukewarm water with a few drops of mild soap, rinse well and dry immediately. Avoid traditional silver cleaners, as they are formulated to remove tarnish
from silver without rhodium and can damage or wear away the protective layer.

18k gold-plated jewellery has a fine layer of gold over a metal base, which gives it that warm, luxurious finish. This layer is more delicate than it looks: continuous rubbing, chemical products and perspiration can wear it away over
time. To clean gold-plated jewellery, use lukewarm water with mild soap, rub very gently with a cloth or soft brush, rinse well and dry straight away. Never use bicarbonate of soda, vinegar or abrasive cleaners.

Golden rule: pearls are the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off. Perfume, hairspray and creams should be applied before putting on pearl jewellery, and direct contact with the pearls should be avoided

After each wear, gently wipe the pearls with a microfibre cloth or a soft, dry cotton cloth to remove the day's residue.

STEP 02

For a deeper clean, dampen the cloth slightly with lukewarm water (never hot) and clean each pearl separately with gentle circular movements.

STEP 03

Avoid submerging the pearls in water, especially if they are strung on thread, as the thread can absorb moisture and weaken over time

Always dry the pearls with a soft cloth before storing them, and let them rest in a well-ventilated place for a few minutes before returning them to their box.

HOW TO STORE YOUR PEARL JEWELLERY

Storage matters as much as cleaning. Keep your pearls in a box or a soft fabric pouch, separated from the rest of your jewellery: the hard surfaces of other pieces can scratch their delicate finish. Ideally, use a jewellery box with fabric dividers and keep them away from strong heat sources or direct sunlight, so that their coating retains its original lustre and colour.
